Burlap & Barrel
Founded in 2016 by Ethan Frisch and Ori Zohar, Burlap & Barrel is an American company specializing in single-origin spices and foods sourced directly from small farms and agricultural cooperatives around the world.
The company began with wild mountain cumin from Afghanistan, where Frisch encountered farmers whose exceptional crops had limited access to international markets. That experience helped establish Burlap & Barrel's direct-trade model, which connects growers with home cooks and professional kitchens while reducing the number of intermediaries in the supply chain.
Burlap & Barrel works with farmers across more than 20 countries, emphasizing traditional cultivation, regional varieties, and traceable origins. Its collection has expanded beyond spices to include distinctive woodland honeys produced in Tanzania.
The company's approach places the agricultural origins of each ingredient at the center, recognizing that soil, climate, harvesting methods, and the people responsible for growing the crops all contribute to their character.
